City Council Approves Measures to Enhance Traffic Safety and Flow |
St. Joseph residents will encounter new parking regulations on Olive Street and Pacific Street as the city enforces measures aimed at improving traffic safety and flow.
On Monday, the City Council approved amendments to the city's code of ordinances, introducing parking prohibitions on specific sections of these streets.
Under the new rules, parking is now prohibited on the north side of Olive Street between Sixth and Eighth streets.
Additionally, parking is banned on the south side of Pacific Street from 33rd Street extending to the Belt Highway, covering nearly five blocks.
These changes come after months of public discussions and requests from both residents and organizations.
The city began considering these parking adjustments in June when the St. Joseph Traffic Commission received multiple requests concerning Pacific Street.
Residents and law enforcement have reported that this area, characterized by steep ditches, is prone to speeding, making it hazardous for parked vehicles and challenging for authorities to navigate safely.
A trial period implementing "No Parking" zones on both sides of Pacific Street demonstrated improved sight distances, enhanced roadway safety, and better traffic movement.
Similarly, the nonprofit group Community Missions prompted the changes on Olive Street due to increased pedestrian activity near their facility, creating unsafe conditions along this busy corridor.
Reviews by the Public Works Traffic Division and the Police Traffic Division found no issues with the proposed changes, noting that adequate off-street parking is available nearby.
A "No Parking" trial on Olive Street also showed noticeable improvements in traffic flow and safety.
Residents are encouraged to adhere to these new parking restrictions to ensure the safety and efficiency of traffic in these areas.
